Local, Seasonal, Affordable
Our previous Sprouts Box initiative has been reborn as the by-donation produce market. Every week during the semester stop by Sprouts to pick up some seasonal BC-grown organic produce at whatever price is affordable to you. Take some for free if you’d like and don’t forget a bag!
This initiative is funded by the Food Security Initiative at UBC Wellbeing.
Produce market FAQ:
When is the Produce market?
The Produce Market is running twice a week: Monday from 12:30pm - 1:30pm and Tuesday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm at Sprouts Cafe (or as long as supplies last!)
What produce is available?
Our offerings change each week, based on what is being grown and harvested in BC. Expect to find a variety of fresh produce! Every week we have some staples including apples, carrots, mushrooms, onions, and some kind of leafy green. The weekend before the produce markets, we will post what produce will be available on the @ubcsprouts Instagram. But this is not a definitive list as last-minute changes from our suppliers can happen. We source according to our purchasing policy, which puts supporting food systems that are local, climate-safe and regenerative for the earth as the highest priorities. Read more here. See samples of past produce offerings below!
How MUCH Should I donate?
Take what you want, give what you can! As with all of our by-donation initiatives, no one is turned away for lack of funds, and you are encouraged to take without donation. For those who can donate, we use these funds to support future produce markets and to give to causes that support our vision for liberation.
What happened to Sprouts Box?
Sprouts Box was an initiative that Sprouts ran for many years that provided a weekly CSA box at cost. In reviewing how this initiative aligned with our vision for food security on campus, a new initiative that was more flexible and accessible to more people was imagined. Now we are able to reach over a hundred folks each week and give them autonomy over which produce they’d like to pick-up.
bring your own bag to carry your produce!
You can also ask a volunteer to see if any extra bags are available for you to use. If you have extra grocery bags at home, feel free to donate them for others to use!
